A step into any State Street Barbers - with its classic décor, hardwood floors, tin ceilings, oak barber stations and throne-like leather barber chairs – is a step back in time to a place where men are treated like men and given the great quality, atmosphere and service they deserve.
The idea for State Street Barbers came to us while MBA students at The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. An entrepreneurship class tasked us with identifying viable new business opportunities; ironically, we looked to the past for inspiration – the traditional men’s barbershop.
As we were developing the State Street Barbers concept, our field research uncovered how all too often men had been forced to make tradeoffs when it came to their grooming needs – whether it be atmosphere and quality for the convenience of a discount chain (“chop shop”) or having to check one’s masculinity at the door to get the superior service typically found at a high-end salon. It was for these reasons that we set out to create a barbershop where a man could go to get great service, in a comfortably refined atmosphere, and with flexible hours to fit to his busy schedule.
Enter State Street Barbers. From the beginning, the entire offering of State Street Barbers -- from services and store design, to details like the magazines and music – was developed with the needs of men in mind. The first location opened in Chicago in December 2003 and quickly earned a stellar reputation among its customers and enjoyed substantial media coverage. Since then, several more well-received locations have opened in both Chicago and in Boston.
Our barbers and stylists are trained professionals who are schooled both in the time-honored traditions of barbering and the latest trends in contemporary styling., And unlike many of today’s salons and grooming establishments who try to be everything to everyone, our menu of services is refined in its simplicity, focusing on what we do best - hot lather shaves and the finest in men’s haircuts, each accompanied by a shampoo, straight-edge neck shave and a shoulder and neck massage.
